Jakob Nielsen Critiques Twitter
Posted by Ara Pehlivanian in Twitter on May 11th, 2009

Few would dispute that Twitter is the hottest social medium around. The microblogging application, which enables anyone with Internet access to issue short public messages-about where to buy the best red-velvet cupcakes or what the latest tally is on swine flu-has enjoyed stunning growth that has made Facebook and MySpace look like yesterday’s children. An increasing number of CEOs are employing Twitter to communicate and bond with customers and employees.
Nonetheless, it might be time to put some brakes on tweeting, according to Jakob Nielsen, a principal at Fremont (Calif.) Web-usability consulting firm the Nielsen Norman Group and author of 11 books on the way humans interact with technology. Nielsen recently answered some of BusinessWeek.com’s questions about Twitter. Edited excerpts follow.

5% of Americans Use Twitter

The latest Harris Interactive Poll as reported via Media Post has a few interesting stats clouded in a few oddly misleading negative statements like “..51% of Americans do not use Twitter or have a MySpace or Facebook account.” That means that those platforms have penetrated 49% of the US in some combination or other. That is about as hockey stick-growth as you get.

Rebecca Churt asks whether the growth rate of Twitter is sustainable in her post, “Twitter and the Biggest Loser Effect.” Lots of Twitter users join but then quit or don’t do anything with the account.
DIY: How To Find Authoritative Twitter Users Plus 100 To Get You Started
Posted by Ara Pehlivanian in Twitter on May 3rd, 2009
There are a ton of Twitter sites aiming to attach a Twitter rank to a user profile, and frankly most of them are spotty at best. Follower count in my opinion is one of the worst metrics to go by with Twitter, and unfortunately that is a main cornerstone to many of the Twitter ranking systems out there.
Managing Twitter Accounts for Companies

There are companies that entrust their Twitter activities to a team of people, especially when updates need to be timely (a news organization, for example). But because Twitter is a conversation, you have to be careful with the whole concept of “ghostwriting,” and extra careful with the company’s image. Once you tarnish that, it’s a struggle to rid them of the stain.
