Apple has just sent out an email alert to iPhone developers that any new app submitted to the App Store will have to be ready for the iPhone 3.0 software, which is due shortly (probably around Apple’s WWDC event in June). Beginning today, any app submitted that isn’t 3.0 compatible will be rejected.

Nokia is about to shake up the app store world.
The Finnish company is planning to roll out an online store for mobile applications later this month. Though Apple, Research In Motion and Google already offer similar services, Nokia’s launch promises to be the biggest app store opening yet and could re-shape the mobile applications market.

We love our mobile phones, especially our smart phones, and we’ve come to think of them as “mini” computers in our pocket. However, the nature of the phones’ hardware still limits them when it comes to sheer processing power. And the more work the phone has to do own its own, the quicker its battery life gets eaten up. That’s why Intel Research Berkeley scientists Byung-Gon Chun and Petros Maniatis have been working on a solution to this problem. They’ve come up with something called CloneCloud, a new service that uses cloud computing to provide extra processing power for mobile phones.

“Top iPhone apps make $400 to $5,000 per day” reads a headline over at Silicon Alley Insider. The right way to read the article, and any others citing a new report by iPhone ad server AdWhirl, is to scroll to the bottom. There, you’ll find the disclaimer that only free apps that crack Apple’s top 100 most popular list can make that kind of money. Everyone else? Long Tail.
Live Streaming Coming to iPhone? Apple Submits New Spec to IETF

It looks like live streaming could be coming to a future generation of the iPhone and/or iPod devices. We’ve just come across this IETF submission containing Apple’s spec for HTTP Live Streaming which describes a protocol for transmitting unbounded streams of multimedia over HTTP. According to the document, the protocol supports encryption of the media and the provision of alternate versions of the stream. The media data can also be transmitted after it’s created, allowing it to be received in near real-time.
Could this mean live streaming is coming to our iPhones?

Wi-Fi connections at [AT&T's] 20,000 US hotspots have more than tripled in a year, up from 3.4 million sessions in the first quarter of 2008 to 10.5 million sessions in the first three months of 2009.
